Sony Xperia ZL Review

Sony Xperia ZL Review

The Sony Xperia ZL smartphone can now be a new impetus for the Japanese corporation. The gadget is very similar to the Xperia Z: it has the same design and decor, but it does not have IP57 certification.

The main disadvantages:

  • non-removable battery;
  • poor room;
  • slightly thicker than the Xperia Z;
  • the quality of the doubtful construction of the rear panel and the aesthetics.

The difference between Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, in fact, comes down to different sizes, choice of finishes and security. The plastic housing here does not look as good as glass, but it has its advantages. Water resistance, of course, is a significant plus, but not everyone needs it.

Appearance and management

The Sony Xperia ZL comes in a box identical to the Xperia Z smartphone. Note that the kit includes an A / C adapter, microUSB cable and a headset with an additional pair of headphones.

Package Contents Sony Xperia ZL

The gadget is a 5-inch smartphone with the smallest footprint. Its dimensions are 131.6×69.3×9.8 mm. The closest competitors have a height: Xperia Z – 139 mm, Samsung Galaxy S4 – 136.6 mm and HTC One – 137.4 mm.

However, the Xperia ZL is the thickest of all these smartphones – 9.8 mm. But these features do not cause inconvenience. The device is comfortable to use.

One of the significant disadvantages is the small decoration class, the lack of elegant design. But this, of course, is not a cause for concern, as the plastic looks great.

The smartphone is one of the most compact gadgets with a 5-inch Full HD screen. Compared to the Xperia Z, the upper and lower panels on the front have dropped significantly in the new phone. Maybe this is the reason for placing the front camera in the bottom right corner. Of course, this is unusual, but such a solution has already been found in Nokia N9. Framing around the sides of the frame around the display has been minimized.

The hardware buttons are displayed on the screen.

Front surface of Sony Xperia ZL

Above the screen you can see the speaker and company logo. Sony smartphones usually come from the factory, with a screen protection in the form of scratch-resistant glass, the Xperia ZL is no exception.

The back panel is made of plastic, whose patterned texture facilitates the use of the phone, because it is held firmly in the hand. But at the same time, we observe. Which seems very sticky. On the back is a 13 megapixel camera lens that protrudes slightly above the surface. Next to it are the speaker grill and the LED flash.

A noise reduction microphone with the Xperia logo has been placed over the lens.

The panel seems to be removable, but it is not. To access the microSIM and microSD card slots, you must open the shutter at the bottom of your smartphone. Not only is it physically uncomfortable, but it doesn't look very aesthetically good.

Rear surface of Sony Xperia ZL

The build quality of the device is good.

On the left side of the phone is a microUSB port, which does not have a jack, unlike the Xperia Z.

On the right side you will find a pair volume control button at the top, a power on / off button and a two-stage camera control button.

It is always convenient to have a separate camera shutter button on your smartphone.

At the top of the Sony Xperia ZL there is only a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

In the lower left corner is a special eye for lace.

Overall, the Sony Xperia ZL is quite comfortable to use: the controls are conveniently located and have a very good response.

Performance and software

The smartphone uses the Snapdragon APQ8064 S4 Pro 4-core Krait chipset with a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz, an Adreno 320 graphics accelerator and 2 GB RAM. As expected, the gadget gains the same benchmarks as the Xperia Z.

Even with the more productive chipsets (for example, the Snapdragon 600), which is based on the Galaxy S4 and Optimus G Pro smartphones, our phone still has enough performance that it can easily handle even the heaviest of applications. .

Sony Xperia ZL ranked fourth in Benchmark Pi, Linpack and AnTutu benchmarks, and Quadrant ranked fifth.

Interestingly, in GeekBench 2, our smartphone got fewer points than Xperia Z.

When you test a gadget in GLBenchmark with a fixed resolution, the Xperia ZL did not fail, being with Xperia Z in one place.

In an important test, the Epic Citadel gadget showed excellent results comparable to other flagship devices.

Sony Xperia ZL uses Google Chrome as a browser, which became much faster after the last update and showed a 1290 ms result in the Sun Spider test, being faster than the Xperia Z, LG Optimus G and Nexus 4.

In BrowserMark 2 and Vellamo, the smartphone ranked 4th.

As a result, Sony Xperia ZL performed well.

The gadget runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system.

Built-in memory – 16 GB. There is support for Wi-Fi, GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS, FM radio, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, 3G and LTE.

Surprisingly, we found that the Sony Xperia ZL has a better screen than the Xperia Z. Since both are identical to the specification (5-inch display with 1920 × 1080 pixel resolution and 441 ppi density) are made by the same manufacturer. manufacturer, however, I suggested that this is due to a unique deviation and not because Sony developed a separate screen for the Xperia ZL.

The TFT screen is based on Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 technology, which increases contrast and clarity, reduces noise and saturates colors to make them more pleasing to the eye.

The contrast is very good. However, the screen in this indicator is lower than the HTC One, LG Optimus G Pro, HTC Butterfly, not to mention the Super AMOLED display on the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The gadget does not have very large viewing angles.

Solar reading is good.

Sony Xperia ZL is equipped with a 13 megapixel camera that can take pictures with a resolution of 4128×3096 pixels. However, if you use the default enhanced auto mode, you will only get 3920×2940 pixel resolution (ie 12 megapixel image).

The difference between the improved and the usual automatic mode is that the gadget itself tries to determine what kind of scene it is shooting and properly sets all the image parameters. This includes saturation mode, contrast mode, metering mode. In normal mode, only the exposure is set automatically and you can experiment with other settings.

In Auto Enhanced mode, it is reported how the gadget will configure the camera and you can easily intervene if you think the image will prove to be of very high quality. But our experience shows that the settings were almost always good. So, if you're not a photography enthusiast, it's best to follow the enhanced auto mode.

The Xperia ZL smartphone offers all kinds of features, including face recognition, smile shutter, geo-tags, touch capture and HDR mode.

Improved auto mode produces beautifully colored, though slightly oversaturated, photos. The small details are clearly visible, the noise level is medium, and the dynamic range and contrast are excellent.

Overall, the results are good, although I wouldn't say there is a noticeable advantage over the good 8 megapixel cameras.

If you go to normal mode, you will get images that look more natural, not over-saturated. This will give you more leeway if you plan to process your photos later.

I also took panoramic photos. The result was a very good panorama.

Next, let's go to the video.

Sony Xperia ZL is capable of shooting Full HD videos at 30 frames per second. The gadget also offers HDR for shooting videos.

We were disappointed that Xperia ZL can capture photos while recording videos, but only with a 1 megapixel resolution. However, this is not very significant.

On the video you can see very good details. Bitrates fluctuate around 17 Mbps.

Below is an example of a recording.

The advantage of HDR photography is not always as clearly visible as I had hoped, but it still adds some detail in bright areas.

An example of HDR shooting.

The smartphone is equipped with a non-detachable battery, with a capacity of 2370 mAh, which is 40 mAh more than the Xperia Z. It is little surprise that, according to official information, the battery is designed for only 13 hours. battery life in talk mode over 3G networks and up to 500 hours of standby time. (versus 14 hours and 530 hours respectively for the Xperia Z). Various posters may explain the situation. But our special battery test showed that the Xperia ZL is less resistant.

So, the Sony Xperia ZL showed a 44-hour battery life result (the device uses 2 hours to talk, 1 hour to watch videos and 1 hour to surf the web daily), which is 4 hours shorter than Xperia Z. But it's still a decent result.

When tested separately, the following data were obtained: the battery lasts 15 hours and 22 minutes of 3G talk, for 6 hours 4 minutes of internet browsing and for 5 hours and 28 minutes of video viewing.

Also, it should be noted that the smartphone has a special mode of endurance developed by the company and that allows to obtain much better battery life results.

the cost

The cost of Sony Xperia ZL on the Russian market is 27,490 rubles.
