Micron and Samsung to manufacture GDDR6 memories
Micron joins Samsung in the production of GDDR6 memory, so we can confirm that the arrival of this memory is getting closer to the new NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards. GDDR6 memories offer greater performance at a lower cost and with less complexity than DDR4 and GDDR5, making them easier to produce and more compatible.
The GDDR6 memories are the evolution of the GDDR5 and GDDR5X, thanks to the production of these new memories we can be more sure that the next graphics cards will arrive with the GDDR6 memories in their VRAM. There is no doubt that, being a memory easier to produce, calls more attention to the different producers of graphic cards.
These memories are capable of reaching speeds of up to 16 Gbps and are manufactured in 16 Gb density dies, something striking if we take into account that the standard allows to manufacture dies of up to 32 Gb of density. These dies of 16 Gb are capable of reaching 24 GB of VRAM and those of 32 of handling up to 48 GB of VRAM. In these 16 Gb we could get up to 2 GB of VRAM memory per chip.
The GDDR6 memories will not only reach the graphics card market for gamers, but also for artificial intelligence applications, network technologies or automotive. Being faster memories, it becomes a more compatible element with devices that work in real time; as well as its greater bandwidth that accelerates the functions of the AI applications.
The new GDDR6 memory chips operate at only 1.35 V, which is 35% less than the 1.55 V needed by the GDDR5 memory.
It only remains to wait to know what will be the first AMD and NVIDIA devices that integrate this GDDR6 memory. For the moment we have been able to confirm that the new NVIDIA GTX110 graphics will use it, according to an agreement signed with SK Hynix. However, we can not forget the existence of other memory technologies such as the HBM2 that AMD currently integrates in some models of its graphics.
