Christian Object Lessons – How to Develop a Creative Mindset

Developing Christian object lessons is a mindset. I've been putting them together for years and I think they are simply the coolest, most fun part of any Bible lesson. My Bible stories for children always contain at least one object lesson. As a result, I'm always on the prowl for something I can use to drive a point home to kids. You need to develop a mindset that no matter where you are or what you do; there is always a potential object or situation that can be incorporated into an object lesson. Do not forget to keep within reach a way to write or record these ideas so they are not forgotten!

So Where Do You Find Objects?

Garage sales are my absolute favorite place to gather items for object lessons. Here are some reasons why:

* You do not have to spend a lot of cash. Now, if you have been in kids ministry for any length of time, you know how important it is to find stuff cheap! Being a good steward is part of the deal, right?

* The selection is awesome. You can find a variety of objects from toys to tools. Any item is fair game for Christian object lessons.

* Garage sales are a breeding ground for ideas. You may come across some weird, off the wall toy, tool, book, or kitchen gadget that would make an amazing, whacky object lesson.

Develop the Mindset

Okay, what is this mindset I keep talking about? It really is a new approach to creating Bible stories for children. Let me give you an example. I was at a garage sale and came across a box of pipe wrenches and pliers. A thought dropped into my spirit. Create a series called "Get a grip on God." Grabbing onto who he really is and not letting go no matter what! A Bible lesson was not driving me to look for pliers. With the mindset I am talking about, the opposite is true. The objects that you find drive ideas for future Bible lessons. Do you see the difference? That is the mindset I am talking about. It's like you're always one step ahead of the game.

Christian object lessons are fun to prepare and to present. There is nothing I enjoy more than to see kids grab hold of a concept aided by a crazy illustration using one of the "gems" I found weeks or months earlier for under a dollar. Now that's fun! Develop the mindset and have some fun as you open up God's word to your kids!
