iFixit’s iPhone 12 mini teardown looks at how Apple fit so much into such a tiny device

Orders for the brand new iPhone 12 mini have began arriving for purchasers, and the group at iFixit did a two-part teardown—of each an EU and US mannequin— to determine how Apple managed to incorporate 5G {hardware} and the same old iPhone elements into such a little device.

The very first thing you discover wanting at the interior photos is the smaller battery within the mini, which measures as much as related iPhone fashions surprisingly effectively, iFixit finds, with 8.57 Wh.

“That’s more juice than the iPhone SE 2020‘s 6.96 Wh, but understandably short of the 10.78 Wh of the standard 12 it’s stacked on top of,” iFixit notes. It’s lower than the ten.78 Wh of the iPhone 12 battery, although.

The Taptic Engine, audio system, and MagSafe ring are all included within the mini in smaller variations to avoid wasting area. But Apple managed to fit the same-sized digital camera as its different iPhone fashions into the mini, which iFixit suggests could have come at the expense of battery life— one thing The Verge’s Dieter Bohn encountered in our iPhone mini assessment.

The mini digital camera has the identical ƒ/1.6 wide-angle and ƒ/2.4 extremely wide-angle cameras discovered within the iPhone 12, the teardown reveals.
