Aorus GTX 1080 Gaming Box, External GPU with Thunderbolt 3

After the good reception of its first external graphics card, the Aorus GTX 1070 Gaming Box,  the manufacturer has decided to launch a superior version that is equipped with a GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. Called the Aorus GTX 1080 Gaming Box, this features mini version of Gigabyte GPU, which occupies less space and consumes less power, which allows the manufacturer to use the same power supply as the one used with GTX 1070. Under the bonnet, the Aorus GTX 1070 Gaming Box features slightly more overclocking, raising the core speed to 1607 Mhz base and 1733 Mhz in Boost mode, with the GDDR5X memory running at 10 Ghz effective. It also comes with a software profile that raises the speed a bit more, raising the core to 1632/1771 Mhz with the push of a button. The graphics get the power of a single 8-pin PCI-Express connector, and features a 5 + 2-phase VRM for added stability.

Recall that the GP104 core that builds this graphics is based on NVIDIA’s 16 nanometer node, and features 2560 CUDA cores, 160 TMUs, 64 ROPs and 8 GB of GDDR5X graphics memory on a 256-bit bus. As video outputs the graphics incorporates three DisplayPort 1.4, a DVI-DL and an HDMI 2.0. It is cooled with a single 90 mm fan and, as we said at the beginning, it is curious that Gigabyte sells it under its own name and not under that of its Gaming division, Aorus.

The system has a power supply of 450 watts, so the user would just have to connect the Gaming Box to the current and his laptop or desktop through Thunderbolt 3 and would be ready to enjoy the power that the graph will provide. That is why we suggest users to go for laptops with thunderbolt 3 to boost their laptop’s GPU performance. The GTX 1080 Gaming Box is able to provide up to 100 watts of charge through the same Thunderbolt 3 port, so if we use it together with a laptop, it will also be charging laptop’s battery.

It also incorporates two DVI, one HDMI and one DisplayPort outputs in order to connect additional monitors, as well as three USB 3.0 ports, a USB 3.1 with additional charge to charge smartphones and tablets and of course the Thunderbolt 3 GPU. Now, the bad part is the price – it will go on sale in mid-October at a price of US $ 750, which means that we will easily see it at 800 euros or more in the European market.
